College Course Registration

A representative from USC Salkehatchie will be at Dorchester Academy on Wednesday, January 5th at 9:00 a.m. to register for the English 102 and Computer Science 102 classes.

English 102 will use the same Handbook but you will need to purchase the text book for $60.00.
The Computer Science book is $65.00.
Please bring your money ( cash or check...no credit cards) for your textbooks to registration.

A week following registration the course tuition bill of $309.00 for each course will be mailed to you at your home address . The amount includes the internal USC Salkehatchie Scholarship. Without the scholarship the cost would be over $600.00 per course. The bill will list the courses you are taking and the total tuition due. Your payment may be mailed along with the bill back to USC Salkehatchie. Payment plans may be set up with the college business office.

Pajama Day

The Interact Club is sponsoring Pajama Day on Friday, December 9th. You may wear your appropriate pajamas to school if you bring either $5.00 or a new pair of pajamas (a complete set with top and bottom any size from newborn to adult). All money and pajamas will benefit the Scholastic Pajama Drive which is a non-profit organization that provides new books and new pajamas to children in need.

This Week's Basketball Games

We have two basketball games this week. We will host the Thomas Sumter Generals on Tuesday night. Games beginning at 4:00. The teams will travel to Holly Hill on Friday night. Please come out and support our Raider Basketball Teams.

High School Christmas Party

The high school Christmas Party will be on December 13th. The lunchroom will cook the meal and teachers will supply the desserts. Students that wish to participate in the gift exchange should bring a gift that costs at least $10.00 but no more than $20.00. Boys will purchase boy gifts and girls will purchase a gift for a girl.

Middle School One Act Play

The Middle School One Act Play actors performed their play " Miss Louisa and the Outlaws" at the SCISA Regional One Act Play competition at the Lourie Theater Wednesday, November 2nd. The cast received a rating of excellent and 1st runner-up. They will advance to the State competition on Nov. 16th.

Veteran's Day

The DA Interact Club will honor our Veterans with a Veteran's Day Breakfast on Wednesday, November 9th beginning at 7:30 A.M. There will be a Chapel Ceremony following at 8:15 A.M. A Breakfast Registration Form has been sent home. Please fill out and return by Monday, Nov. 7th.

The Senior Beta and Interact Club will be taking up donations to send gifts to soldiers over the holidays. There will be a collection box for these items at the program. Suggested items: Shampoo/conditioner, Lotion, Chapstick, Envelopes, DVD - movies or TV shows, Brush/combs, Toothpaste, Black Socks, Magazines/books, Deodorant, Baby Wipes, Writing paper, Body wash/soap, Shaving Cream/razor blades, AA or AAA batteries.

Dress Down Day

DA Student Government is sponsoring "Dress Down Day" on Wednesday, September 28th. This is a fund raiser for Mrs. Winnie Mraz, one of our school custodians, who has been diagnosed with cancer and is out having surgery & treatments. We feel this is a great way to show our love and support for her. To participate in " Dress Down Day" you will need to buy a special $5.00 sticker from your homeroom teacher . Only those students with special stickers will not have to wear "Wednesday Wear" on that day and may dress in casual wear with shirts untucked and hats ( no pajama pants or athletic wear).
The Student Government will also sponsor a Bake Sale on Wednesday, October 5th with the proceeds going to Mrs. Winnie. All items will sell for $1.00.

Summer Art Camp at DA

There will be a Summer Art Camp offered at DA for K4-2nd Grade on Monday, June 13 - Wednesday, June 15. Students will make clay beads, water color sunsets, pastel landscapes and still life.
Monday, June 27- Wednesday, June 29 will be for 3rd grade & up. These students will create an 11x14 wet on oil canvas and receive instruction in various art techniques.
Cost: $100 ( Snacks provided)
Class size is limited.

Fourth Grade Poetry Cafe'

The Varsity Baseball Play-Off Game will begin at 4:00 on Friday, May 6th against Calhoun Academy. It will be a doubleheader. Booster Passes will not be honored for the baseball play-off games.

The JV/Varsity Softball Game times have been moved up on Friday, May 6th to 4:00 for JV followed by Varsity.

No C Team Girls Softball

Since there were not enough students that expressed interest, we will not have a Girls C Team Softball Program this year. We hope next year to have enough interest for this great activity !

2011 Summer Job Application

Dorchester County Government Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is looking for applicants for summer employment. Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 22 and must be residents of Dorchester County. The Program begins on June 6th and ends on August 5th, 2011. Applications due back to coordinator by April 29, 2011. Applications are available on DA High School Hall Bulletin Board and in the office.

Want To Go Green For St. Patrick's Day ?

Carolina Cuts has joined with the PTO to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Wednesday and Thursday they will be at DA offering Green Glam Strands ( small glitter strands that are tied in the hair lasting up to 1 month ). Cost $5 for 2 strands and $10 for 4 strands. These will be done during lunch. Please send the correct money with your child.

Stanford Testing

Dorchester Academy will begin Stanford Testing on Monday, March 7, 2011 for all students in grades 1-8. Testing will continue every morning through Friday, March 11. It is very important that your student be present and on time each day. Studies have shown that getting adequate rest and eating a good breakfast helps students do their best. Please encourage your student to do his/her best, because Stanford results are very important. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about testing.

Softball and Baseball Have Begun

Thank you to all the coaches, parents, players, and supporters who worked so hard last weekend to get our fields, dugouts, and bleachers in tiptop shape for our first home baseball and softball games. Everything looks great! Thanks also to the families of Edward Jordan, Bryan Jordan, Shirley Westbury, and Grady Jordan who donated the lovely baseball scoreboard in honor of their father, Cecil Jordan. What a great addition to our baseball field. If you haven't joined us for a game, come out and join the fun here at the Academy.

Steak Supper Support

Thanks to all the parents, grandparents, community members, and Academy supporters who attended our Booster Club Steak Supper this year at the Klauber building. Thank you also to all the people who sold tickets, setup the building, ordered and cut the steaks, cooked the food, decorated, served, cleaned up afterwards, and to Jamie and Lawanna for donating their talents to support Dorchester Academy. Thanks to the PTO and teachers for the baskets and the items for the silent auction. They were lovely. What a great night!! If you missed it...there's always next year!

Soccer Program

Condolences to the Soard Family

Sat. Jan. 29th C-Team Basketball Game

C-Team Basketball will have its last game on Saturday, January 29th. They play following the B-Team games against Thomas Heyward on Saturday.
B-Team games begin at 10:00 a.m. The C-Team game will begin following the Boy's B-Team game. Players need to be at the gym by 11:00 a.m.
The C-Team players will also receive their certificates on Saturday.
Please remind your players they are not to go on the stage during the games.

Congratulations To Our Middle School Drama Team

The Middle School Drama Team received an Excellent Rating at the SCISA State Drama Festival at the Sumter Opera House in Sumter on January 25th, 2011. Cole Cleland received the Best Actor Award and Zachery Bozard received the award for Most Outstanding Performance. A big "Thank You" to Mrs. DeeDee Hartzog for all her hard work in getting these young actors prepared for their competition.

Junior Miss Workday

There will be a Junior Miss workday this Saturday, January 8th at the Taps Studio from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please bring a parent or guardian to the meeting . Parents will be dismissed around 10:30 a.m. Various phases of competition will be discussed and the aerobic fitness routine will be rehearsed so wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.

DA to host a Civil War Exhibition Day on January 7th

All students of DA will step back in time to the 1860's on Friday, Jaunary 7th. Reenactors from all over the Lowcountry will camp on DA's soccer field the night of Thursday, January 6th. Students will arrive at school the morning of Friday, January 7th and be greeted with the sights and sounds of the War Between the States. Students will tour exhibition tents that specialize in topics such as medical care, artillery, clothing and candle making. Keep an eye on the weather and be sure to have your child dressed appropriately.
